How these are computed

Population now: a projection. The World Bank's estimate for the middle of 2025 (8,215,424,893 on 1 July 2025), carried forward by births minus deaths at the rates below (2.29 people a second). Nobody migrates into or out of the world as a whole, so births minus deaths is all of its change, and the three counters add up. It assumes those rates still hold; it is not a count, and a newer estimate will replace it.

Births and deaths: the World Bank's crude birth rate (16.27 per 1,000) and death rate (7.55 per 1,000) for 2024, applied to the population now and spread evenly over the year: 4.28 births and 1.98 deaths a second. It assumes 2024's rates still hold. DERIVED from two ESTIMATES.

"Today" starts at midnight on your own clock. "During your visit" starts when you opened this page. Nothing here is a count of real births or deaths.

Why not the published growth rate? The World Bank also publishes a growth rate for 2025, 0.91% a year (2.37 people a second). It is a separate series and does not exactly agree with births minus deaths (2.29 a second), so the clock uses births minus deaths for all three counters and they add up.

Evidence & method

The chart shows only three-hour periods that had ended when Yank read the feed. NOAA's product labels some later periods "estimated" with its forecast's values, so any period that had not ended is shown as a FORECAST, whatever the feed calls it. Kp 5 is a G1 storm on NOAA's scale.

Evidence & method

SWPC's words, translated into Yank's: an SWPC ALERT means a threshold was reached, so it is OBSERVED here; a WARNING or a WATCH says something is expected, so it is an ALERT here, never the event; a SUMMARY says what happened. SWPC's own headline is quoted.
